Damnacanthal: A Promising Component of Noni

Recently a lot of advancements have taken place in the area of cancer treatment. A lot of substances like herbs, vitamins, hormones have been known to fit into anti-cancerous category.

But noni has been a pioneer in the dietary supplement category to offer this support. This incredible property of noni is due to one of the key components – Damnacanthal.

Damnacanthal (3-hydroxy-1-methoxy-anthraquinone-2-aldehyde) belongs to a class of naturally occurring phenolic compounds called anthraquinones.  It has been known to target in inhibiting the cancerous activity of the cell.

A research study conducted in Japan was able to depict the fact that damnacanthal interferes with the growth of RAS cells and acts as a wide spectrum kinase inhibitor. The tumours are thus deprived of the nutrients and unable to multiply. The role of oxidative stress in tumour development is well established. The antioxidant slows down the benign tumour growth. Noni contains abundant anti-oxidant.

Damnacanthal also has a purgative action. It exerts a stimulating effect to increase peristalsis and cleans the colon. So it should be used with caution during pregnancy and with persons suffering from Irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, damnacanthal has other biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic and anti-bacterial.
