Morinda citrifolia or noni is a tropical plant found in the South Pacific Asia and other tropical regions of the world. It is known as the ‘Queen of fruits’ in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It has been used as the folk medicine since ages. Noni has an array of 150 plus phytochemicals such as scopoletin alkaloids, anthraquinones, octoanoic acid, potassium, vitamin C, terpenoids, beta sit sterol, vitamin A, alizarin, amino acids and proxeronine that gives boost to its therapeutic powers. It works wonders in promoting the overall quality of life.
In a preliminary research study conducted at Jadavpur University, Kolkata ,the anti-cancer (anti-tumor) activity of freeze dried noni powder was established on the Swiss albino mice bearing liquid tumor in the peritoneal cavity and solid tumor in the hind limb induced by Ehrlich ascites carcinoma(EAC) cell lines.
It was found that in liquid tumor, noni significantly (p<0.01) decreases the tumor volume, tumor weight, viable tumor cell count and increases the life span of the mice bearing EAC cell lines.
In solid tumor, noni decreases the tumor weight and decreased the tumor volume significantly (p<0.05). Even the histopathological findings revealed less proliferation with some necrosis and apoptosis .Noni also demonstrated hepatoprotective and reno protective action on liver and kidney respectively.
It has been also studied that freeze dried noni restores the hemoglobin level, RBC, WBC count more or less to normal level and overall has a protective action against the hematopoietic system.
